Verdict

Our Verdict on the BA/BS

More than half of the accounting faculty are licensed certified public accountants (CPAs). Every class, on campus or online, is taught by full-time faculty rather than adjuncts or teaching assistants. A full-time Executive in Residence also links you to current practice.

The Miller College of Business at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, offers the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Courses are asynchronous, so you can complete them fully online at a pace that fits your day. You'll learn from the same professors as on-campus students.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Ivy Tech and Vincennes University associate degree graduates with a 2.5 GPA: you enter with junior status.
  • Indiana CPA candidates: from January 1, 2027, one Indiana pathway asks you for a bachelor's with an accounting concentration totaling 150 credit hours plus one year of experience.
  • Students in Kentucky and Ohio: you may qualify for Indiana in-state tuition as a first-time undergraduate.
  • Students who want a master's soon: the Accelerated Master's Program lets you earn a bachelor's and a Master of Science in Accounting in four years if you qualify.
  • Busy adults who prefer one or two courses at a time.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

The accounting major is 75 credits. You'll take a 48-credit Miller College business core, 21 credits of required accounting and 6 credits of electives. ACC 305 Accounting Systems and Analytics studies accounting information systems.

ACC 310 teaches the determination of taxable income, and ACC 451 covers auditing procedures, internal control and standards. Electives include Government and Nonprofit Accounting and Tax Planning for Businesses and Entities. A three-part career sequence, MCOB 100, 200 and 300, builds job search skills, and the business core ends with Business Policy and Strategic Management. You're encouraged to take internships.

If you're taking the Indiana CPA route that begins in 2027, plan for 150 credit hours.
