Verdict

Our Verdict on the BSBA

The accounting concentration at ECU runs from Intermediate Accounting through Internal Auditing, with a leadership and professional development program woven into the business core. You take the same degree whether you study online or on campus, and ECU's master's in accounting is the next step toward certified public accountant (CPA) licensure.

East Carolina University's College of Business in Greenville, North Carolina, awards this Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an accounting concentration. It's a 120-semester-hour degree. If you're an eligible transfer student, you can take the online degree completion version.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Transfer students with earlier college credit who want to finish an accounting bachelor's from home.
  • Future internal auditors, because the plan includes Internal Auditing and Accounting Information Systems.
  • Students who want a business degree with an accounting focus and a leadership portfolio to show employers.
  • Aspiring CPAs who plan to add ECU's Master of Science in Accounting after the BSBA.
  • North Carolina residents who want an in-state distance rate.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

Intermediate Accounting I and II teach you how financial statements are put together and where reporting rules cause problems. Cost Accounting covers standard costs used for planning and control. Accounting Information Systems looks at business processes and internal controls.

Taxation for Decision Making shows you how tax rules shape business choices. Internal Auditing covers control systems. The business core uses the motto "Think, Value, Communicate, Lead." BUSI 4200 Leadership Capstone ends the degree, and you finish a professional development portfolio before graduating.

Length

How Long It Takes

The minimum is 120 semester hours. Transfer students enter through the degree completion route, which builds on credits already earned. ECU says the BSBA gives a strong foundation for professional certification. If you want the CPA, you'll continue into the MSA after the bachelor's.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Fall 2026 distance tuition is $191.04 per credit for North Carolina residents and $889.63 for non-residents, before technology and other fees. Billing stops at 12 credit hours, so you won't pay extra tuition for a heavier semester. Course materials cost $21.00 per credit hour, and you can opt out.

Format

Format and Schedule

You can finish the degree on campus or online. Accounting is one of the online BSBA concentrations, alongside General Business and Human Resource Management. You'll do the same coursework either way. ECU describes a network of mentors, advisors and coaches around you.

Credentials

Which Certifications It Prepares You For

The College of Business is accredited by AACSB. ECU says it is one of only two North Carolina institutions with that status held continuously since 1967 or before. The program prepares graduates for corporate accounting, government accounting and internal auditing roles. For the CPA exam, you move on to the MSA.

Voices

What Students and Graduates Say

A master's student featured by the college in 2025 said the online route makes it possible for someone like her to become a CPA. She also said she talks about ECU accounting to anyone who will listen. At the Meet the Firms event in September 2025, the college reported more than 30 accounting firms, companies and agencies meeting over 200 business students.

A professor said the firms return each year because ECU students have been exceptional hires. An accounting alumnus told the college his first visit to that event led to an internship with Cherry Bekaert, then a second internship and a full-time job.
