Verdict

Our Verdict on the BA

Lakeland pairs a required data analytics thread with a paid co-op route that can supply up to 25% of the degree. Add Becker-based certified public accountant (CPA) and certified management accountant (CMA) prep courses that count as MBA credit. Then you have the path from classes to exams to employers mapped out.

Lakeland University is a private nonprofit school in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Its B.A. in Accounting is taught through the School of Business and Entrepreneurship. You can complete it fully online, in evening or hybrid formats, or on the main campus.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • If you're a working adult, classes meet once a week or online, in 7-week or 12-week courses.
  • If you're chasing fraud work, the Forensic/Fraud emphasis is one of few offered in the country.
  • If you want to earn while you learn, co-op places you with partner employers for paid work that counts toward the degree.
  • If you're a future CPA or CMA candidate, four online MBA courses prepare you for the CPA, and two prepare you for the CMA.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

Core courses include ACC 395 and ACC 396, Intermediate Accounting I and II. They cover assets, liabilities, equity, investments, leases, pensions and the cash flow statement. ACC 350 and ACC 355 teach you federal taxation, first for individual taxpayers and then for C corporations, S corporations, partnerships and nonprofits.

ACC 465, Accounting Information Systems, puts you in QuickBooks Online and hands-on data analytics. ACC 472 covers auditing standards, working papers and audit reports. The Forensic/Fraud emphasis adds Fraud Examination courses, including one that uses the data analysis software practitioners use. The optional Cooperative Education emphasis adds 22 to 26 semester hours of paid work.

Students often hold internships at local CPA firms as early as sophomore year.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree takes 121 semester hours. The catalog lays it out as a four-year, eight-semester plan, and summer classes can speed it up. The program page advertises a three-year option. You can earn up to 30 credits for documented experiential learning, and College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams count too.

A bachelor's plus MBA in four years is available. The CPA exam needs 120 hours to sit and 150 to apply for the credential. The four CPA prep courses add 12 credits toward that 150.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

You'll pay $550 per credit for evening and online undergraduate tuition, or $1,650 per class. CPA and CMA prep courses cost $2,100 per class, with materials extra.
