Verdict
Our Verdict on the BBA
Loyola's accounting major was the first in Maryland to earn its own accreditation from AACSB International. A certified public accountant (CPA) track and two accelerated options point you toward licensure and a master's.
The Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting sits in the Sellinger School of Business and Management at Loyola University Maryland, a private nonprofit school in Baltimore. Classes meet on campus. You choose between an entrepreneur track and a CPA track.
Fit
Who It Fits
- If you're a future auditor, the auditing course teaches the audit risk model and the auditor's duty to the public.
- The CPA track and the 3+1 path give you a fourth year with a chance to sit for some or all exam sections. That matters if you're aiming at the CPA exam.
- If you're a future business owner, the entrepreneur track lets you shape accounting toward your own venture.
- If you're in another major, an accounting minor covers financial accounting, taxation and cost accounting.
- If you want a big-firm start, the school lists the Big Four, RSM, BDO and Ellin & Tucker among employers hiring its accounting graduates.
Curriculum
Tracks and Core Courses
Three featured courses show the range. Auditing covers reporting risk, the audit risk model and the auditor's ethical duties. Taxation of Business Entities moves from income and investment taxation through accrual tax accounting to business forms and tax research.
Accounting Information Systems looks at internal controls and how to detect fraud. You also study financial accounting and cost accounting, then pick the entrepreneur or CPA track. Honor societies, student organizations and guest lectures add to class time, and executives in residence teach and advise.
Length
How Long It Takes
The accelerated options let you finish a bachelor's and a Master of Accounting in four to five years. In the 3+1 plan the master's is your fourth year, and you may sit for some or all of the CPA exam during it. The 4+1 route takes five years in total.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
The school lists about $1,905 per credit, based on its annual out-of-state tuition. The university's tuition page gives the exact charge for your year.
