Verdict
Our Verdict on the BS
Delaware's accounting department holds a separate AACSB accounting accreditation, which fewer than 200 schools have. It also coaches you on the certified public accountant (CPA) exam while you're still an undergraduate, using Becker review material and one-on-one office hours.
The University of Delaware in Newark offers the Bachelor of Science in Accounting through the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, in its Department of Accounting and MIS. You take classes on campus. The degree prepares you for the CPA exam in almost all states.
Fit
Who It Fits
- Students who want a Big Four internship: a one-credit sophomore class, The Accounting Experience, puts you in front of recruiters early.
- Future tax preparers: the Lerner Tax Clinic gives you hands-on tax practice outside the classroom.
- Students who want 150 hours fast: you can finish a B.S. and M.S. in accounting in 5 years or less on the accelerated path.
- Students who like smaller upper-level classes: an alumnus on Reddit recalled intermediate and advanced courses capped near 35 to 40.
Curriculum
Curriculum
You start with Accounting I and II, then move into Intermediate Accounting I and II. Cost Accounting, Auditing and Advanced Accounting follow in your upper years. Two tax courses, Income Tax Accounting and Advanced Federal Taxation, cover individual and more complex returns. Accounting Information Systems and Big Data Technologies show you the data side of the work.
The business core includes finance, operations management and business analytics. Professional electives total nine credits of upper-level accounting, finance or information systems, and at least two must be accounting. Honors in Accounting lets a 600-level accounting course count for honors credit. The Accounting Students Association, Community Audits and internships or externships extend the coursework.
Length
How Long It Takes
The degree requires a minimum of 123 credits, and the department publishes a recommended four-year plan you can follow. The accelerated path leads to a B.S. and M.S. in accounting in 5 years or less, which reaches 150 credit hours.
Advisors help you meet your state's CPA requirements. Co-ops generally last at least six months, and Lerner now offers yearlong placements funded in part by a Delaware Workforce Development Board grant.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
The school reports about $1,633 per credit hour. Across 123 credits, it's worth asking the bursar how that rate applies to you.
Format
Format and Schedule
You'll meet on campus for classes. The Lerner Career Lab runs workshops with employer-designed simulations, including auditing at PwC. If you do a co-op, you enroll in Business in Practice, BUEC 364, to reflect on the job while you work.

What Students and Graduates Say
An alumnus on Reddit said all of the Big Four firms recruit at UD and recalled accounting professors who held a CPA license or an accounting PhD. Another commenter called UD a big school that feels small, with peer tutoring just for accounting majors.
The school reports that 97% of class of 2025 accounting graduates were employed or in further study. Business Degree Central's 2023 rankings named Delaware the top school in the state for bachelor's accounting students. In 2024 three accounting seniors became Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholars, a record for the university.
