Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS

You can earn UNC Greensboro's Bachelor of Science in Accounting fully online or on campus, with the same faculty either way. Qualified students can fast-track a master's in accounting and finish both degrees in about five years.

The Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC Greensboro) runs this 120-credit degree. The accounting program holds separate AACSB accreditation. You can study full time or part time, and the online version is asynchronous.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • You work or raise a family. Online courses have no set meeting times, and you can take as few as one course a semester.
  • You've got credits already. You can transfer up to 64 credits from a North Carolina community college, with no limit on credits from four-year schools.
  • You want a master's fast. The Accelerated Master's Program lets you earn both degrees in about five years.
  • You want firm contacts. Beta Alpha Psi hosts an annual Meet the Firms event, and Company Spotlights introduce you to business leaders.
  • You want a second major. The school says accounting pairs especially well with finance.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

Intermediate Accounting I and II cover financial statements and the rules behind them. Accounting Transaction Processing Systems looks at accounting subsystems and systems design through case studies. Cost Accounting teaches costing systems and decisions for managers.

Your tax course covers tax structure and principles. Auditing Concepts walks you through the audit process, audit programs and reports, including audit software. You pick one elective, such as Principles of Fraud Examination or Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting.

Upper-level students can take Internship in Accounting for college credit.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree is 120 credit hours, with at least 36 at the 300 level or above. You'll finish the 29 hours of Bryan School pre-admission courses by the end of your sophomore year.

Your major adds 24 hours on top of the 38-hour business core. Accounting courses at the 300 level or above transfer only by examination. In the Accelerated Master's Program you can apply up to 12 graduate credits to both degrees.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

UNC Greensboro reports a per-credit charge of $866 to federal data. Tuition is billed per credit hour, and financial aid and scholarships are open to you.

Format

Format and Schedule

You can take this major on campus or 100% online. Online courses are asynchronous, so you work on your own schedule within assignment deadlines, though some exams may need you to log in during a set window. You'll meet an academic advisor each semester to build your schedule. You're always invited to campus but never required to come.

Credentials

Which Certifications It Prepares You For

The accounting program holds its own AACSB accreditation, separate from the business school's. The degree builds toward a master's in accounting and the certified public accountant (CPA) exam, and the school says its graduates continue to outperform the national average on the CPA exam. Faculty hold master's degrees in accounting and related fields, and several are CPAs.
