Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS

LSU pairs its 120-hour accounting degree with an internal auditing minor. The minor comes from one of only two U.S. schools the Institute of Internal Auditors calls a Center for Internal Audit Success. Each summer 100 to 150 students in that program work paid internal audit internships across the country.

The Department of Accounting in the E. J. Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University offers this Bachelor of Science in Accounting. LSU is a public university in Baton Rouge. Classes are taught in person on campus.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • If you're a Louisiana student, you get a degree that meets the state's education rules to take the certified public accountant (CPA) exam.
  • If you're planning the extra 30 hours for a Louisiana license, many students choose LSU's Master of Accountancy right after the bachelor's.
  • If you're eyeing Texas CPA licensure, the department teaches the accounting research and ethics courses the Texas board requires.
  • If you want internal audit work, the minor is open to all LSU students.
  • If you're aiming at energy employers, graduates have been hired by ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Chevron and Entergy.

Curriculum

Curriculum

The degree covers auditing, corporate accounting, government accounting, information systems and tax planning and compliance. The internal auditing minor adds Internal Auditing I, Internal Auditing II, Case Studies in Internal Auditing and Governance, Risk & Controls. Students in the minor learn by doing, with activity-based work on assessing risk, improving governance and fixing business processes.

Internship in Accounting, ACCT 4231, puts you in at least 20 hours a week of accounting work under a professional's supervision. The department also hosts Beta Alpha Psi, the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and the Undergraduate Tax Association.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree is a 120-hour program. Louisiana's CPA license needs 30 more hours. Many students earn them in the Master of Accountancy, which the school describes as a fifth-year professional program finishable in 12 months or less. If you complete both the BS and the MAcc, you can meet Texas CPA exam education rules by taking the research and ethics courses.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

You'd pay about $268 per credit, according to LSU. Internships carry course credit, and the school notes that internal audit interns are paid between $10 and $32 an hour, depending on location and company policy.

Format

Format and Schedule

You study on the Baton Rouge campus. Internships earn course credit, in general accounting and in internal auditing. The internal audit minor runs on a calendar-year cycle, with its first course in spring and its last in fall.
