Who It Fits

  • You're an active-duty or veteran student. A signed military pathway agreement may grant credit for experience and training, and active-duty students may qualify for a discounted rate.
  • You're a community college graduate. Up to 90 credits transfer, and the School of Accountancy builds ties with Virginia community colleges.
  • You're eyeing a graduate degree. The MBA Early Entry and Early Start options let you earn graduate credits before you finish the bachelor's.
  • You're a self-directed learner. Courses run asynchronously, with virtual office hours when you want one-on-one help.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

ACCT 305 Essentials of Financial Accounting I is your gateway course, and it introduces data analysis in Excel. ACCT 306 covers inventories, property, investments and liabilities. ACCT 307 finishes the series with leases, pensions, income taxes and the cash flow statement. Financial Auditing (ACCT 411) covers auditing standards and the ethics of the public accounting profession.

You'll take two tax courses, ACCT 425 and 426, that cover people and business entities. ACCT 460 Accounting Information Systems links accounting to other business processes and internal controls. You finish as a senior with the MGMT 485W strategy capstone. As a junior or senior, you can earn credit for internships or co-op through the college career office.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree requires 120 credits, and ODU publishes a suggested four-year plan. Six credits in one eight-week term count as full-time. Your normal load is two courses. You can transfer up to 90 credits. You'll need at least 25 percent of credits from ODU, including 12 upper-level major hours. The Dual Dominion path adds an on-campus master's in about one more year.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Your online tuition is $443 per credit hour for Virginia residents and $453 per credit hour for out-of-state students. If you're active-duty military, you may qualify for a discounted rate.

Format

Format and Schedule

Courses follow an accelerated 8-week, asynchronous format. Two terms fall in each semester, which gives you six start dates a year. Most internships stay on a 16-week schedule. You get a dedicated academic advisor through graduation, and you can use career services.

Credentials

Which Certifications It Prepares You For

The college holds AACSB accreditation in business and a separate AACSB accreditation in accounting. ODU says it's one of only 180 institutions with that extra accounting accreditation. The School of Accountancy says its programs prepare you for the certified public accountant (CPA), certified management accountant (CMA) and certified internal auditor (CIA) credentials. You can also use Becker and Gleim exam preparation materials.
