Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS/BA

You study accounting through a 24-credit core that ends in Auditing I and Advanced Accounting. You can also start the Master of Accountancy as an undergraduate, because a two-semester fast track adds 30 credits toward certified public accountant (CPA) licensure.

Southern Utah University offers the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Accounting through the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business, in the Accounting and Finance department. You can take it on the Cedar City campus or fully online. You can also take online courses if you're on campus.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Students aiming for the CPA: the fast track into the Master of Accountancy covers the extra 30 credits.
  • Out-of-state online students: tuition is the same whether you live in Utah or not.
  • Students who like networking: the Professional Accounting Club runs dozens of employer events and trips to employers in northern Utah and Las Vegas.
  • Students who want a language or a science base: you choose a Bachelor of Arts with a foreign language or a Bachelor of Science with math or science.

Curriculum

Curriculum

The accounting core is 24 credits. Financial Accounting I covers generally accepted accounting principles and the conceptual framework. Accounting Information Systems teaches how to design a system and set internal controls. Tax I covers individual federal income tax and how to research tax rules. Cost looks at costs in service and manufacturing firms.

Accounting Data Analytics builds an analytics mindset for business questions. Auditing I is the first of three audit courses, and Advanced Accounting handles business combinations and governmental accounting. An accounting internship course is also offered online with the department chair's permission. In spring, accounting students can prepare free tax returns for community members through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree totals 120 credits, and 74.5 of them are the accounting curriculum. The required accounting courses are offered in fall, spring and summer. Statistics and college algebra are required. Add the two-semester fast track and 30 more credit hours, and the school says you can be ready for CPA licensure in as little as five years total.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Tuition is $315 per credit, and it's the same for in-state and out-of-state online students. The semester charge is capped at $3,780 for 12 to 20 credit hours, so you won't pay more per term for heavier loads. Scholarship opportunities are listed for online students.

Format

Format and Schedule

You can study on the Cedar City campus or completely online. The online version lets you study around your schedule, with structured coursework to keep you on pace and access to faculty for help and mentorship. You'll get IT, academic and mental health support as an online student.
