Verdict
Our Verdict on the BS
TCNJ sends about three in four accounting graduates to public accounting firms, and the 2024 class put 65% in the Big Four. A first-semester colloquium with firm speakers and a sophomore career-planning course set that up, and a cohort in classes capped at 30 students keeps you on track.
The Department of Accounting and Information Systems in TCNJ's School of Business offers the BS in Accountancy on the campus in Ewing, New Jersey. Classes meet in person. You move through the program with the same cohort.
Fit
Who It Fits
- Students aiming at Deloitte, EY, KPMG or PwC: interns have worked at all four, and all of the Big Four attend on-campus recruiting events.
- Students who want paid work during school: co-op placements are paid, carry credit and run at least 20 hours a week.
- Future certified public accountant (CPA) candidates: the 4+1 BS/MS with Management and Organizations adds a master's in one more year, and minors or electives can reach 150 credits.
- Students who like tax: the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program lets you prepare free returns for community members.
- Students who want audit work: Audit Analytics and a hands-on audit lab are part of the program.
Curriculum
What You'll Study
The accounting core is 10 courses. You take Intermediate Financial Accounting I and II in the junior year. Cost Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, Advanced Accounting and the first income tax course follow. You'll take External Auditing, a writing-intensive course, in the fall of senior year.
In the spring you choose a second income tax course or Audit Analytics. You'll take a for-credit career-planning course with recruiter visits and weekly workshops as a sophomore. The senior capstone is a research- and writing-intensive course. Beta Alpha Psi, the Institute of Management Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants run student chapters.
Length
How Long It Takes
The degree takes 32 course units, which equals 128 credit hours, over a structured four-year sequence. The 4+1 BS/MS with Management and Organizations is open to first-year and transfer applicants and ends in a master's after five years. TCNJ names two routes to the 150 credits New Jersey wants for the CPA: a minor or extra electives as an undergraduate, or the accelerated master's.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
The school reports $1,032 per credit. In-state full-time tuition is $8,192 per semester, or $10,493 with fees.
Format
Format and Schedule
You attend classes on campus and move through the program as a cohort that shares classes and professors. Internships often draw on the campus's closeness to Philadelphia and New York City. An internship coordinator in the department supports you once you're placed.
