Verdict

Our Verdict on the MAcc

Four emphases let you steer a 30-credit degree toward tax, analytics, professional accounting or a general mix. You'll set the pace yourself at one to four courses a semester, with summer sessions if you want to finish sooner.

The Master of Accountancy sits in the Accounting and Finance department of Southern Utah University's Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business. You can complete it fully online or in person on the Cedar City campus.

  • Future tax specialists: the Taxation emphasis covers individual, corporate, pass-through and transfer taxes, including gift and estate.
  • Data-minded accountants: the Business Analytics emphasis teaches programming for data visualization.
  • SUU seniors: the Grad Path program lets eligible undergraduates earn up to 6 graduate credits at undergraduate tuition rates.
  • Career changers with a business degree: SUU reviews your record and tells you which foundation courses to take first.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

Five core courses make up 15 credits, and you pick 15 more from electives. Taxes for Pass Through Entities covers partnership taxation and choice of entity. Auditing II walks through sales, payroll, inventory and payment cycles, plus audit sampling.

Advanced Accounting Data Analytics uses cases and projects with several analytics tools. The Accounting Ethics Seminar uses case studies of ethics scandals. Electives include Forensic Accounting, Corporate Tax I, Estate and Gift Taxes, and an Accounting Internship Program for 1 to 3 credits.

The Professional Accountancy Club holds over 25 employer events a year.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree is 30 credit hours. If you need foundation courses, they add 45 credits, which brings the full path to 75. Students in Grad Path or with an approved credit overload may finish in as few as two semesters. You can take at most 12 credits a semester and have six years to finish. The school says the degree meets the 150-credit-hour requirement for certified public accountant (CPA) licensure.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Tuition is $509 per credit. That's $15,270 for the 30 credits. Graduate tuition waivers are awarded each year through the business school to full-time students, meaning at least 6 graduate credit hours.

Format

Format and Schedule

You can take the degree fully online or in person on campus, and the courses are offered every semester. Credentials

Which Certifications It Prepares You For

The business school is AACSB accredited. The degree is designed to prepare you for the CPA, certified management accountant (CMA) and certified fraud examiner (CFE). The Professional Accounting emphasis targets all three, and the Taxation emphasis is built for the CPA exam.

The Practice and Theory Seminar uses CPA review materials, including a Gleim CPA supplement option. The program was designed to meet Utah licensure requirements, so you'll want to check your own state's rules.
