Verdict
Our Verdict on the MAcc
UGA lets you pick audit, taxation or advisory inside a one-year MAcc. The program also leaves room to study for and sit the certified public accountant (CPA) exam before you start work.
The J.M. Tull School of Accounting offers this Master of Accountancy through UGA's Terry College of Business in Athens. You'll take classes on campus. You can enter in fall or spring, and summer entry is for the internship course.
Fit
Who It Fits
- Accounting graduates who want to finish in one year: you can sit the CPA exam while you're still enrolled.
- Future tax specialists, since you take five tax courses from Partnership Tax to Cross-Jurisdictional Taxation.
- Auditors-in-training, since you choose Audit II, Financial Statement Analysis and Accounting Data, Risk and Control.
- UGA undergraduates in any Terry business major: you can use a Double Dawg pathway to earn the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and MAcc together.
- Law students, through the joint Juris Doctor and MAcc path, or planners, through the MAcc/MS Financial Planning option.
Curriculum
Tracks and Core Courses
Every specialization has 18 required accounting hours. Audit students take Taxation II, Audit II (which builds on the Audit I prerequisite), Financial Statement Analysis, Advanced Accounting, Accounting Data, Risk and Control, and Accounting Policy and Research. The taxation track replaces most of that with Partnership Tax, Corporate Tax, Income and Transfer Tax Planning, Tax Policy and Research, and Cross-Jurisdictional Taxation.
The advisory track requires Accounting Analytics and nine hours of advisory electives in one area of focus. Electives include Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination, plus Ethics and Accounting in Practice. ACCT 7800 is a three-credit graduate internship that you can take in any semester except your last. The school has a Beta Alpha Psi chapter, and an advisory board gives feedback on the school's direction.
Length
How Long It Takes
If you have an undergraduate degree and the accounting prerequisites, you can finish in one year. The usual structure is 18 required hours plus accounting and other electives of 3 to 9 hours each. Other routes include the Double Dawg BBA/MAcc, the joint law degree and the MAcc/MS Financial Planning. With a MAcc, only one year of relevant experience is required for CPA licensure.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
UGA reports about $1,182 per credit. The school adds that many firms pay a first-time CPA pass bonus equal to or above UGA MAcc tuition.
Format
Format and Schedule
You attend class on campus in Athens. You can start in fall or spring. A summer start is for the internship course. The program also lists information sessions in Correll Hall, and a corporate relations team connects recruiters with MAcc students.
Credentials
Which Certifications It Prepares You For
The Terry College of Business holds AACSB accreditation, and AACSB lists accounting accreditation for it. Admission asks for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) unless you're exempt, and accounting majors from UGA and Georgia Tech are among those exempt.
The school reports that MAcc graduates had the top first-time CPA pass rate among large programs in two of the last three years. You study for, sit and pass the CPA exam during the program.
