Verdict

Our Verdict on the MAcc

North Alabama supplies the coursework beyond a bachelor's that you need toward the 150 hours for the certified public accountant (CPA) exam. It comes in a 30-hour degree you can finish fully remote. Its fraud, data analytics and controllership electives, plus short one-credit exam-topic courses, let you tailor the last 12 hours.

The Sanders College of Business and Technology at the University of North Alabama offers the Abroms and Associates Master of Accountancy from Florence. The school delivers it fully online or on campus.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • You're an accounting graduate short of 150 hours. The MAcc provides the remaining courses if you have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • You're a working professional. You can pick part-time pacing and start in fall, spring or summer, or in the second eight-week term of fall or spring.
  • You don't have an accounting bachelor's. You can complete up to 15 hours of undergraduate prerequisites chosen with the MAcc recruiter.
  • You want to investigate fraud. You can take Fraud Examination, which covers topics common on the Certified Fraud Examiner exam.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

The core is 18 hours, and you choose 12 hours of electives. You begin with MAcc Essentials, a one-credit course on succeeding in the online environment, accounting certifications, career planning and graduate writing. Advanced Tax Accounting covers planning techniques for individual taxpayers and business entities.

Advanced Auditing applies audit standards to cases and stresses auditing of computer systems. Research in Accounting teaches you to search authoritative databases and communicate solutions. Electives include Fraud Examination, Controllership, Business Combinations and Data Mining and Analytics for Accountants. Among the electives are four one-credit AC Issues courses.

Three of them count toward the degree, and you don't have to take them in the same semester.

Length

How Long It Takes

The MAcc is 30 semester hours. The school lists 12 to 18 months full time. Part time, it lists 24 to 30 months. You can start in fall, spring or summer, with second eight-week starts in fall and spring.
