Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS

Oregon State splits its accounting major into a chain of three External Reporting courses, then adds tax, audit and an accounting analytics course that works with large data sets. Because the degree runs fully through Ecampus on four start terms a year, you can begin in any season.

Oregon State University offers the Bachelor of Science in Accounting through its College of Business. You earn the degree through Ecampus, and the courses follow the same term calendar as the Corvallis campus.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • You're a working adult restarting a degree. Classes are asynchronous, with no scheduled meeting times, so you can study around a full-time job.
  • You're a future data-minded accountant. Accounting Analytics and the elective IT Auditing teach you analytic tools and audit standards.
  • You're an honors-minded student. The honors degree is available online, with faculty research and a thesis.
  • You're eyeing a graduate degree. The Accelerated Master's Platform lets you take graduate courses as an accounting undergraduate, and they count toward the MBA or M.S. in Business.
  • You're a transfer student. The catalog lays out shorter entry paths for transfers.

Curriculum

Courses, Thesis and Capstone

You start with the business core: Principles of Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Finance, Business Law and Excel data analysis. Then External Reporting I, II and III cover the accounting cycle and what financial statements tell investors and lenders.

Cost Management I teaches you product costing and budgeting. Taxation I covers business income tax and tax research. Assurance and Attestation Services introduces you to auditing standards and the audit process. You can choose electives including Advanced Accounting, Advanced Taxation and IT Auditing.

Your program ends with BA 466, Integrative Strategic Experience.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree totals 180 quarter credits, and the catalog's sample plan finishes in four years across three quarters a year. If you're a second-year transfer, you have roughly three years to go.

If you're a third-year transfer, you have about two years or less. The catalog advises checking your state licensing board for certified public accountant (CPA) education rules. Your academic advisor can recommend courses to fill remaining credits for licensure.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Your tuition is $438 per quarter credit, with no additional charge for nonresident students. A reviewer at a college-advice site notes that a student in Florida, Texas or New York pays exactly what an Oregon student pays.

Format

Format and Schedule
