Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS

Salisbury turns its audit class into a working accounting practice: in the capstone internship, student teams act as the staff and the instructor acts as managing partner. The clients are non-profits, so you'll finish with real audit procedures behind you.

The Bachelor of Science in Accounting is part of the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business at Salisbury University in Maryland. Classes meet on campus. A published four-year curriculum guide shows you the sequence.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Future auditors: ACCT 497 runs alongside ACCT 407 Auditing, so you practice audit programs while you study them.
  • Students who want tax experience: a three-credit spring internship has you help local taxpayers file returns.
  • Aspiring fraud examiners: the Upper-Division Certificate in Fraud and Forensic Accounting also prepares you for the Certified Fraud Examiner exam.
  • Maryland certified public accountant (CPA) candidates: the required coursework meets the state's exam requirements, and the Perdue MBA can supply the 150 hours.
  • Students who'd like to travel: ACCT 435 holds part or all of the class in another country over winter term.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

You build from ACCT 304 and 305 Intermediate Accounting, which cover financial statements, inventory valuation, long-term debt and share-based pay. ACCT 302 Cost Accounting teaches budgeting, variance analysis and activity-based costing. ACCT 341 covers personal income tax and introduces tax research and IRS forms.

ACCT 407 Auditing covers engagement planning, internal control tests, sampling and workpapers. ACCT 420 Accounting Information Systems looks at how organizations capture and control data. ACCT 403 Advanced Accounting handles business combinations and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reporting. Fraud electives include Fraud Examination, Financial Statement Fraud and White Collar Crime.

In the capstone, you learn QuickBooks and complete required audit program procedures for non-profit clients.

Length

How Long It Takes

The curriculum guide is built so you can graduate in four years. You need 56 college credit hours to enter the Professional Program, plus a 2.5 GPA in the pre-professional core.

You'll find the Accounting Admissions Test offered twice per semester. Up to 6 credit hours of comparable courses from AACSB-accredited schools may be approved. For Maryland's 150-hour licensure rule, add undergraduate coursework or the Perdue MBA.

The fraud certificate also counts toward those hours.
