Verdict

Is University of Arizona Worth It?

Arizona ends the accounting major with a final-semester capstone built around financial statement analysis, and it teaches online students alongside the same faculty as the Tucson program. As an online student you also get career coaching and the partner-firm network that on-campus students use.

The online Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an Accounting major comes from the Dhaliwal-Reidy School of Accountancy. The school is in the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. You study fully online. You'll apply to Eller separately from the university.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Students who want Tucson faculty from a distance: online learners are taught and mentored by the same professors as the campus major.
  • Future auditors and tax preparers: the program page names independent auditing, tax advice and return preparation as career paths.
  • Aspiring analysts: the capstone covers forecasting, pro-forma statements and company valuation.
  • Students who want a master's next: the school says its graduate accounting programs supply the credits that licensure requires.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

The major is 21 accounting units, and you add 30 units of professional business core. Cost and Managerial Accounting shows you cost-volume-profit analysis and job costing. Intermediate Financial Accounting I and II cover how assets, liabilities and equity are measured and reported. The income tax course focuses on how individual taxpayers are taxed.

Information Quality and Assurance has you study ethics and professional standards through landmark fraud cases. The capstone, Analysis of Financial Statements, runs in your final semester. It covers profitability, credit risk and valuation. Electives include Profit Planning and Control, Not-For-Profit Accounting and an Accounting Internship worth 1 to 12 units.

You also prepare a tax return in tax software and build an Excel model.

Length

How Long It Takes

Arizona describes the major as a four-year program of 120 credits. Eller's sample plan assumes 14 to 17 credits a semester. You apply for Professional Admission in the second sophomore semester, which opens the upper-division accounting courses. The sample plan suggests you use summers for internships, study abroad or volunteering. Licensure calls for 150 credit hours, and the school points to its graduate accounting programs for the extra coursework.

Tuition and Fees

Arizona lists the online program at $525 per credit for 120 credits.

Format and Schedule

It's fully online and built around a flexible schedule. You're admitted into Business Administration and move to the Accounting major after the Professional Admission milestone. Online applicants also have a summer admission cycle, as well as fall and spring, according to the 2023-24 catalog.

Which Certifications It Prepares You For

Both the Eller College and the Dhaliwal-Reidy School of Accountancy are AACSB accredited. Eller says the degree meets the Arizona requirement to sit for the certified public accountant (CPA) exam. That requirement asks for 24 semester hours of accounting and 18 of related courses.

In Arizona, you may sit for the exam while finishing your extra coursework. Eller's Beta Alpha Psi chapter was recognized as a distinguished chapter in 2023, and the school runs a PwC Connect program for undergraduates.
