If you're aiming to become a certified public accountant (CPA), Houston has a pathway built for it. You can also earn an Internal Audit certificate from a Center of Excellence program. And if a master's is in your plans, the Professional Program in Accountancy lets up to 6 graduate hours count toward your bachelor's. It's all part of a 120-credit BBA you can finish online.

Houston's Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting comes from the Department of Accountancy & Taxation in the C.T. Bauer College of Business. You can take it on campus or fully online through UH Extend.

• Aiming at the Texas CPA Exam? The curriculum targets its core areas, and you can file your Application of Intent as early as your third year.
• Want to be an auditor? The Internal Audit track earns you a certificate recognized by the Global Institute of Internal Auditors.
• Drawn to energy? The Oil & Gas Accounting track adds three oil and gas courses.
• Like a little competition? The department joins four to five case competitions each semester, including PwC, Deloitte and KPMG events.
• Thinking about a master's? The Professional Program in Accountancy lowers the hours you need for the MSACCY.

The accounting major is 42 credit hours inside the BBA. You'll start with Principles of Financial Accounting and Principles of Managerial Accounting. Next come Intermediate Accounting I and II, Cost Accounting, and Accounting Information Systems. Federal Income Tax and Financial Statement Auditing give you the two big professional skills.

Introduction to Data Analytics in Accounting teaches you to read large datasets and is required on the Fall 2026 plan. For electives, you can take Advanced Accounting, which covers consolidated statements and business combinations, or Corporate Taxation. Internships can count for degree credit, and Beta Alpha Psi and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) are there to join.

The BBA is 120 credit hours. There's an optional Fast Track Exam, 25 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Score 80 or above and you can skip Financial Reporting Frameworks and go straight to Intermediate Accounting I. In the Professional Program in Accountancy, up to 6 graduate hours count as BBA electives and reduce the hours you need for your MSACCY.

That master's is a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program.

The online BBA is $409.25 per credit hour. UH Extend charges a flat rate with no additional fees, so all 120 hours come to about $49,110.

The Online BBA in Accounting runs through UH Extend, and it's the same degree taught on the Bauer campus. If you're online, you can email the program office to plan your schedule. On campus, the department holds career fairs each spring and fall. Professional Program students also attend Friday colloquiums with speakers from partner firms.

Bauer holds AACSB accreditation in both business and accounting, and only 194 institutions worldwide can say that. The Internal Audit program is one of just 14 in the world recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Institute of Internal Auditors. Career specialists in the Rockwell Career Center work only with accounting students.

The college says its accounting students are among the most highly recruited in Houston by large public accounting firms. One graduating student credited the program and Beta Alpha Psi for a full-time offer at a Big Four firm.
