Verdict

Our Verdict on the MACC

FIU lets you choose a major inside the Master of Accounting, either Taxation or Audit and Data Intelligence. The hybrid version finishes in 10 months and meets two evenings a week, so you can reach the 30-hour Florida licensing mark within a year.

The School of Accounting in the Chapman Graduate School of Business at Florida International University offers this Master of Accounting in Miami. You can take the hybrid version, which blends on-campus and online classes, or a separate online version.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • If you're aiming at Florida certified public accountant (CPA) licensure, this master's satisfies the 30 credit hours beyond a bachelor's degree that Florida requires.
  • If you want tax depth, the Taxation major includes Estate Planning, Taxation of Pass-Through Entities and Principles of International Taxation.
  • If you want to be an auditor, the Audit and Data Intelligence major covers Fraud Examination and Current Issues in Auditing. It also covers a technology, control and audit course on accounting information systems (AIS).
  • If you like a fixed group, the program is a cohort-based, lock-step model.
  • If you want firm contact early, student chapters sit inside the School of Accounting. They include Beta Alpha Psi, the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).

Curriculum

Curriculum

Everyone takes Value Added Accounting Practices, Global Accounting, Auditing, Financial Strategy, and Accounting and Quantitative Methods. Then you pick a major. The Taxation major adds courses like Tax Research, Practice and Procedure, State and Local Taxation and Tax Policy. The Audit and Data Intelligence major adds Business Analysis and Valuation, Accounting Research and Reporting and Advanced Managerial Accounting. The school says the curriculum keeps pace with automation and data visualization.

Length

How Long It Takes

The hybrid version lasts 10 months and begins each fall. The online version is 30 credit hours across 12 months, with two courses in each eight-week session, and begins each spring. It's designed for you if you already hold a Bachelor of Accounting from a U.S. accredited school.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

FIU lists hybrid tuition of about $36,000 for Florida residents and $39,000 for non-residents, and you'd pay about $1,002 per credit.

Format

Format and Schedule

The hybrid version meets in person on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the MMC campus, with the rest of the work online. Because the evening sessions are fixed, you can plan work around them. You'll move through the courses with the same cohort.
