Verdict
Our Verdict on the MS
UConn's master's has taught accounting online since 2003, and it's got just one required course: Ethics and the Accounting Professional Environment. You build the other nine courses yourself from a list of 18 electives, with no preset track.
The University of Connecticut School of Business offers this Master of Science in Accounting. It's delivered fully online and asynchronously, and the catalog calls it a dual AACSB accredited program. The program began in person in 1999 and moved online soon after.
Fit
Who It Fits
- Accounting bachelor's graduates: you get the extra 30 credits you need for the 150-hour certified public accountant (CPA) education rule.
- Career changers: as many as half of students come from another field, and a 12-credit Accounting Fundamentals Certificate prepares you to apply.
- Students drawn to analytics: four Accounting Analytics courses can earn you a certificate alongside the degree.
- UConn accounting undergraduates: you can take up to four MSA courses before you graduate.
- Travelers and service members: one student finished about half the coursework while stationed in Europe.
Curriculum
What You'll Study
Ethics and the Accounting Professional Environment is the one required course. Electives include Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination, Business Sustainability Reporting and Analysis, and Enterprise Risk Management under the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) framework.
Data Analytics: Skills for Accountants prepares you to work with data scientists, and its sequel covers cleaning data and fixing errors, using Excel and SAS. Financial Statement Analysis and Business Valuation uses statements to value firms.
Tax electives cover flow-through entities, C corporations and Taxes and Business Strategy.
Length
How Long It Takes
The program is 30 credits, or ten three-credit courses. You can take up to five courses in a semester, or spread the load across more semesters if you work full time. Finishing the 12-credit Accounting Fundamentals Certificate cuts the load from ten courses to eight.
The accelerated route takes a UConn bachelor's plus the master's in 4.5 years, with the master's typically done 6 to 8 months after the undergraduate degree. Combined with an accounting bachelor's, the degree meets the 150-hour CPA education requirement.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
The 2026-2027 fee is $1,125 per credit hour, or $3,375 per course. That comes to $33,750 for 30 credits. The price is the same for residents and non-residents, and limited one-time scholarships are available.
Format
Format and Schedule
Courses run asynchronously on the Husky CT platform, built around weekly modules and discussion boards. There are deadlines, but there's no set meeting time. The year has three 12-week sessions in fall, spring and summer, and you can start in any of them. You can study full-time or part-time.
Credentials
Which Certifications It Prepares You For
The program holds AACSB accreditation, and UConn is one of only 194 institutions with a specialized AACSB accreditation in accounting. The coursework is built to prepare you for the CPA exam, and the school flags which exam sections various courses target. The United States Distance Learning Association has recognized the program for best practices in online learning.
