Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS

UConn's accounting major pairs a data-analytics course, ACCT 3210, with a required one-credit seminar called Introduction to a Profession. If you apply by the end of sophomore year, you can take graduate courses early and finish a bachelor's plus master's in under five years.

The University of Connecticut School of Business awards a Bachelor of Science in Business with a major in Accounting. You'll take the four-year program in person on the Storrs campus. It combines a general business background with junior and senior accounting and business law courses.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Future certified public accountant (CPA) candidates: the 30-credit MS in Accounting is designed to meet Connecticut's 150-hour education rule, and the accelerated track lets you start the master's early.
  • Strong sophomores: the accelerated B.S./M.S. lets you count up to 12 graduate credits toward both degrees.
  • Students who want work experience before graduation: you can join the many accounting majors who complete a spring or summer internship supervised by a firm.
  • Future management accountants: you can shape electives toward the certified management accountant (CMA) exam with your accounting advisor, the program says.
  • Students who like data work: you'll take Accounting Information Systems and Data Analytics as a required course.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

Intermediate Accounting I and II form the financial reporting core of the major. Accounting Information Systems and Data Analytics sits among the required courses beside Cost Accounting. Federal Income Taxes covers individual tax rules. Assurance Services introduces you to the audit side of the profession.

Introduction to a Profession is a 1-credit course you'll take in residence at UConn as an accounting major. Add one more 3000 or 4000-level School of Business course, and the major courses total 22 credits. The School of Business common body of knowledge and a capstone surround them.

The catalog lists learning goals in business software, ethics, teamwork and persuasive communication.

Length

How Long It Takes

The undergraduate program is a four-year plan. On the accelerated track, you apply near the end of sophomore year, then apply to the M.S. program during senior year. Up to 12 credits of graduate coursework count toward both the B.S. and M.S., and the pair finishes in under 5 years. The master's is 30 credits and is built to meet Connecticut's 150-hour CPA education requirement.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

The school reports about $1,654 per credit in tuition. If you complete graduate courses during your bachelor's, you can save on the master's, since those credits count toward both degrees.
