Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS

Florida State builds its accounting major around a gate. You need a B or better in two intro courses and a pass on the department's own competency exam before upper-level work. After that, a Meet the Firms event puts Big 4 and regional recruiters in front of you, and a combined path adds the Master of Accounting.

The Bachelor of Science in Accounting sits in the Herbert Wertheim College of Business at Florida State University in Tallahassee. It's taught in person. The same face-to-face program also runs at the Panama City campus.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • If you're aiming at the Big 4, Meet the Firms brings those firms, regional firms and agencies to campus, and about 100 students attend each year.
  • If you want to be a certified public accountant (CPA) and get the 150 hours in one school, take the combined BS/Master of Accounting path. Up to three graduate courses count toward both degrees.
  • If you like clubs tied to the profession, you can join Beta Alpha Psi, the National Association of Black Accountants or the Association of Latino Professionals for America. Women in Accounting is another option.
  • If you want time abroad, the department's EY International Scholars program and the college's global exchange programs sit alongside the internship program.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

Your first accounting courses are Introduction to Financial Accounting and Introduction to Managerial Accounting. You need a B or better in both. From there you'll move through the upper-level sequence term by term. Financial Accounting and Reporting I, II and III build the core. Cost Accounting covers how costs are measured.

Accounting Information Systems looks at the systems that hold financial data. Tax Accounting I and II cover individual and business tax. Auditing Theory and Application I covers how audits work. UCC and Law for Accountancy rounds out the plan. An advisory board of business leaders meets twice a year to keep the curriculum current.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree is 120 credit hours, mapped to eight semesters and four years. Florida requires 150 semester hours for CPA licensure. The Master of Accounting adds 30 credits, and the combined pathway lets you start graduate courses as an undergraduate. To apply for the combined pathway, you need an overall GPA of at least 3.4. You can take the master's full time or part time.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Florida State lists $636 for each credit hour in its federal report, and scholarships are available.

Format

Format and Schedule

Classes meet face to face on the Tallahassee campus, and the Panama City campus offers the same in-person program. You'll apply to the College of Business, usually at the start of your junior year. The internship and international programs add learning outside the classroom.

Credentials

Which Certifications It Prepares You For

The college holds AACSB accreditation. Its Accounting program also holds the separate AACSB accounting accreditation, which the school says only 195 institutions worldwide hold.
