Verdict

Our Verdict on the BS

USF builds data analytics into the accounting major itself, with a required Analytics in Accounting course and a choice of three analytics electives. The online route is a completion track for transfer students. You'll study in a Tampa market where the Big Four hire heavily.

The Accountancy and Analytics B.S. comes from the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy in the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida. You earn 120 credit hours. The online track starts at the junior level and is built for transfer students.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • If you're a community college graduate with 60 or more credits, the online track picks up at the junior year.
  • If you're a working adult, you can fit the schedule around a job, family duties or a long drive to campus.
  • If you like data work, the analytics core and electives let you lean toward reporting, auditing technology or tax.
  • If you're a future certified public accountant (CPA) candidate, you'll find a school-arranged review-course partnership and a later Master of Accountancy.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

You start the major with Intermediate Financial Accounting I and Cost Accounting and Control I in the same semester. Later courses include Accounting Information Systems, Auditing I and Concepts of Federal Income Taxation.

Analytics in Accounting is required. You then pick one elective: Financial and Managerial Reporting with Data Analytics, Advanced Auditing with technology, or Business Entities Taxation and Tax Analytics. One experiential course, such as an Accounting Internship, can count toward your degree.

Length

How Long It Takes

Your degree totals 120 credit hours. The catalog publishes both a 2-year and a 4-year plan of study. You'll begin online at the junior level with 60 or more transfer credits.

Plan on 10 to 15 hours or more a week for each 3-credit class. Florida requires 120 semester hours to sit for the CPA exam and 150 for licensure.

You can finish the Master of Accountancy in 12 to 18 months.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

You'll pay $211.19 per credit as a Florida resident and $611.39 per credit as a non-resident, from the general undergraduate schedule. More than 175 scholarships are open only to business majors.

Format

Format and Schedule

You take all classes online through Canvas. The mix is asynchronous work with no set time, plus some sessions that meet by Microsoft Teams at a set day and time.

To enroll in the online track you must meet one of several conditions. Examples are working 40 hours a week or living 45 or more miles from every USF campus.

Online students get the same faculty and college resources as on-campus students.
