Verdict

Our Verdict on the MS

Fordham builds its one-year M.S. in Professional Accounting around two required tracks, and the track courses count fully toward the degree, so you won't add any extra coursework. Audit Data Analytics and an R programming course give the audit side a data focus.

The Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University, a private school in the Bronx, offers this 30-credit Master of Science. The program is designed for people with or without an accounting background.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Career changers from other fields, since the program welcomes students without accounting degrees and offers first-semester prerequisite courses.
  • Working accountants who want to keep their jobs: the part-time schedule can mean as little as one day of classes a week.
  • Students who want data skills for audit, through Audit Data Analytics and the Accounting Technology Analytics track.
  • If you're an undergraduate chasing the 150-hour certified public accountant (CPA) rule, you can add this one-year master's to a public accounting degree.
  • Students who want New York City employers close by for internships and networking.

Curriculum

Concentrations and Core Courses

You pick one of two tracks: Accounting, Auditing, and Advisory, or Accounting Technology Analytics. You choose one when you enroll. Required courses include Corporate Taxation, Financial Statement Analysis, Accounting Information Systems, Audit Data Analytics, Advanced Audit Concepts and Practices, and the Professional Practice Research Seminar.

R Statistical Programming is on the course list. Concentrations such as Audit Information Technologies and Advisory add a specialty. Internships are part of the curriculum. Technical workshops and industry seminars run alongside classes, and communication and presentation skills get special emphasis.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree is 30 credits. You can finish in one year full time, or spread it over a longer stretch part time. If you don't have U.S. tax coursework, you'll take Individual and Business Entity Taxation (3 credits) as a prerequisite.

For CPA licensure, the degree can supplement an undergraduate public accounting degree to meet your state's education rules. The Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholars Program can help students reach the 150-credit-hour requirement.

Cost

Tuition and Fees

Fordham reports a charge of about $1,076 per credit. The Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholars Program covers 100% of tuition and academic fees for selected students in a fifth-year accounting master's, not including books and living expenses.

Format

Format and Schedule

Classes meet on the Fordham campus. Part-time students can enroll for as little as one day of classes per week, which fits a full-time job. The school describes interactive class experiences that mimic current working conditions.

Voices

What Students and Graduates Say

Graduates featured by the school praise learning real-life scenarios from instructors instead of only textbook problems. One graduate who joined PwC chose Fordham for its rigor and alumni network.
