If you'd rather stay home, SUNY Polytechnic's two degrees and Pace's master's can be done online. Once you graduate, you can expect to earn around the state median of $102,640 as an accountant or auditor, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Method

How We Chose These Programs

Every program on the New York list is an accounting degree. You could sit in a Manhattan classroom, on an upstate campus, in an evening class or at your kitchen table. We only count accreditation when the program itself appears on an accreditor's list.

Those accreditors are AACSB, the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) or the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE). Bachelor's and master's degrees are scored in separate groups on cost, graduate earnings, completion, flexibility, track record, accreditation and reputation.

The methodology page shows how the weighting works.

  • The school is based in New York
  • In-state rate shown when the school publishes one
  • Scored the same way as every list, and compared only with programs at its own degree level

Each Program Score blends seven factors: Cost 20%, Graduate Earnings 20%, Completion 15%, Flexibility 15%, Credential Alignment 10%, Track Record 10%, Program Reputation 10% (method version 2.0).

Campus Programs in Every Corner of the State

You can study in the city or upstate. Baruch offers a Bachelor of Business Administration with an Accountancy Track and an Accounting Analytics Track. Analytics students are encouraged to join a paid co-op of four to six months. Its MS Accountancy has General and Information Analytics tracks, and one of them is designated as a science, technology, engineering and math program.

Buffalo, Binghamton and Albany add public university bachelor's degrees. Binghamton reports an 82% graduation rate and sends new hires to the Big Four firms, and Albany pairs its degree with Ernst & Young and PwC programs. Fordham's Master of Science in Professional Accounting takes one year, with Accounting, Auditing, and Advisory and Accounting Technology Analytics tracks.

NYU's master's is 30 credits over one year, and 95% of its 2025 graduates had a job offer within four months. If you're working, you'll like that Albany's master's has a part-time option and meets evenings and weekends.

Paths Toward CPA Licensure

New York sets its own licensing rules, and every program here says how it prepares you for the CPA. SUNY Polytechnic's master's is registered with the New York State Education Department as a licensure-qualifying program for the 150-semester-hour requirement. Buffalo and Binghamton both offer a master's route to the 150 hours. Albany's master's meets the 150-hour education requirement, and Baruch has a five-year BBA/MS path to the CPA.

Albany also notes that its bachelor's graduates can sit for the CPA exam right after graduating under New York's 120 sit rule. Before you pick a program, read the state board's page and our CPA requirements guide. Then ask admissions how the program's credits count toward your 150 hours.
