Verdict
Our Verdict on the MPAcc
Texas McCombs runs its Master in Professional Accounting as a one-year degree with a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) designation and three entry doors: Traditional, Bridge and Integrated. Core accounting classes sit beside MBA electives, so you can pair audit or tax with finance or technology.
The Master in Professional Accounting is offered by the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin, a public university. You'll attend in person in Austin. The traditional format accepts a bachelor's degree in any discipline, with no work experience required.
Fit
Who It Fits
- Career changers from other majors: the Traditional MPA takes any bachelor's degree, and a student ambassador chose McCombs for its support of non-accounting backgrounds.
- Current UT seniors in non-accounting majors: the Bridge format starts MPA courses in your senior year.
- McCombs business students: the Integrated MPA combines a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in accounting with the master's.
- Economics majors: the Econ-MPA dual degree earns a B.A. in economics plus the MPA.
- Students who want finance or IT depth: MBA electives in finance, management, information technology and marketing sit beside the accounting core.
Curriculum
Concentrations and Core Courses
Core classes build the accounting foundation, and MBA electives in finance, management, information technology, marketing and more round out the degree. Integrated MPA students choose among four concentrations: Financial Reporting and Assurance, Managerial, Tax, and Generalist. All four contain 36 hours of graduate coursework.
Classes are case-based, so you work through real business problems. Study abroad courses in Prague add an international option. Outside the classroom, you can meet seasoned accountants for course credit, take an internship or two, and prepare tax returns for low-income filers.
You work with an MPA career coach throughout the program.
Length
How Long It Takes
The Traditional MPA takes you one year and runs 31 to 43 hours, depending on waivers. MPA Bridge lets current UT undergraduates start graduate courses in their senior year. The Integrated MPA lets McCombs students pair the BBA and MPA, taking several graduate courses at undergraduate tuition rates.
If you're in the 31-hour plan and recruit in the fall, you're encouraged to take fewer fall courses and graduate in early summer. The curriculum lays the groundwork for the certified public accountant (CPA) exam.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
McCombs puts the 31-hour plan at about $28,205 if you're a Texas resident and $49,020 if you're not, for 2026-2027.
