Verdict

Our Verdict on the BSBA

You finish UCF's accounting plan with one full spring: Auditing, Accounting Analytics, business tax and the Strategic Management capstone. You'll also take three one-credit career courses inside the business core.

The Kenneth G. Dixon School of Accounting sits inside UCF's business college in Orlando. You earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in accounting. You take classes on campus.

Fit

Who It Fits

  • Florida residents: you pay $212.28 per credit hour at a public business school.
  • Future auditors, since you take Auditing as a required course and its goals include preparing you for the certified public accountant (CPA) exam's auditing section.
  • Students who like data work: you'll take Accounting Analytics, which every major requires.
  • Students who want a research project: you can write a thesis through the Honors in the Major option.
  • Anyone planning the Florida CPA license, since you can meet the education rules with the BSBA and the master's in accounting together.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

As a sophomore you start with Principles of Financial Accounting and Principles of Managerial Accounting. As a junior you take Intermediate Financial Accounting I and II. Cost Accounting I covers using accounting information for planning, control, costing and pricing decisions. As a senior you take Accounting Information Systems and Advanced Issues in Financial Accounting. The last term adds Auditing, which covers audit standards and procedures.

Accounting Analytics teaches you to pull value from big data with advanced analytics and emerging tools. Taxation of Business Entities and Transactions follows. Three one-credit courses, Career Search Strategy, Business Interviewing Techniques and Executing Your Career Plan, round out the business core. Beta Alpha Psi, a student chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Student Accounting Society are open to accounting majors.

Length

How Long It Takes

The degree totals 120 credit hours, and the school lists a typical time of four years. The plan of study runs two years of accounting and business core after the sophomore start, with 13 to 16 hours a term. You need nine hours of summer credit.

Only grades of C or higher from AACSB-accredited schools transfer in. Up to 45 hours of College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) credit, credit by exam, extension, correspondence and Armed Forces credit count. For the CPA route, the combined BSBA and master's in accounting curriculum meets Florida's educational criteria.
